U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) agents assigned to Del Rio Sector’s Carrizo Springs Station in Texas recently arrested three U.S. citizens attempting to smuggle four undocumented individuals into the country, one of which was allegedly in possession of narcotics and a stolen handgun.
Agents apprehended the suspects on Jan. 7 at an immigration checkpoint set up on Farm to Market Road 2644, a CBP press release said. Two vehicles traveling the road shortly after midnight were stopped and investigators discovered the undocumented individuals inside.
“Immigration checkpoints continue to prove effective in our multi-layered approach to border security,” Del Rio Sector Chief Patrol Agent Jason D. Owens said in the release. “These arrests highlight the importance of border security and the dangerous situations our agents face as they protect our communities.”
One of the suspected smugglers was allegedly found to be in possession of various controlled substances, including cocaine, the release said. The same individual was also alleged to possess a stolen handgun and loaded magazine.
The case has since been turned over to the Department of Homeland Security Investigations for further investigation and is set to be prosecuted by the U.S. Attorney’s office.
