When the ball dropped in Times Square to mark the start of 2022, the U.S. population was estimated by the U.S. Census Bureau to be at 332,403,650, a .21% increase from last year.

According to data shared by the U.S. Department of Commerce in a Jan. 6 press release, there are an estimated 706,899 more people in the U.S. than on Jan. 1, 2021. Overall, the data showed that the nation’s population has edged upward by 0.29% since April 1, 2020, an estimated 954,369 people during that period.

“In January 2022, the United States is expected to experience a birth every nine seconds and one death every 11 seconds,” the Census Bureau data noted in the post. “Meanwhile, net international migration is expected to add one person to the U.S. population every 130 seconds.”

When births, deaths and net international migration is factored together, the U.S. population is expected to increase by one person every 40 seconds, the release said.

The data also noted that the projected world population stood at 7,868,872,451 on Jan. 1, an increase of about 0.95%, the release said.

Approximately 4.3 births and 2 deaths are projected worldwide every second in January, the release said.
