The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) recently announced a new program that will enlist and encourage recent graduates and federal employees to focus on the climate change crisis.
The Climate Change Professionals Program will support the agency’s focus on adapting to climate change and improving resilience, according to a Jan. 12 release.
“The Climate Change Professionals Program will be instrumental in helping the Department adapt to our changing climate by providing hands-on experience and guidance to young professionals interested in climate adaptation and resilience,” DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas said in the release.
According to the release, the program is part of the Honors Program, which Mayorkas started in July 2021, with climate change holding the second field spot in the program.
The release emphasizes the DHS' commitment to prioritizing and addressing the climate emergency, reiterating the multi-level threat that the climate crisis presents to Americans.
The Climate Change Action Group, comprised of senior officials from the department, will lead participants of the program.
"The program will develop the next generation of climate experts, improve climate literacy throughout the Department, and help us execute our Climate Action Plan to remain mission-resilient while reducing our own impacts on the environment," Mayorkas said in the release.
