The Bureau of Land Management Cody Field Office is seeking public comments as it evaluates a plan to decommission Fubar Reservoir northwest of Powell.
A locally popular recreation area at one time, the reservoir has been silted in and non-functional for the last 20 years. Engineering analysis determined that the reservoir has reached the end of its lifespan, and alternatives to remove silt or enlarge the capacity are cost prohibitive.
The BLM proposes to construct a spillway that safely passes water and sediment through the existing embankment to remediate the possibility of an uncontrolled breach releasing water and sediment downstream. In addition, a road around Fubar Reservoir would provide public access to traditionally used areas.
The environmental assessment is available for public review and comment at the BLM’s online NEPA Register at https://eplanning.blm.gov/eplanning-ui/project/2014896/510. The comment period runs from January 21 through February 22, 2022.
