Washington, DC - U.S. Senator Barbara Boxer (D-Calif.), Chairman of the Senate Committee on Environment and Public Works, today made the following remarks regarding the U.S. District Court of Appeals finding that the Bush Administration's controversial 2005 Clean Air Mercury Rule was illegal:
Senator Boxer said: "It was obvious to anyone who cares about air pollution that the Bush Administration's rule on mercury was designed to protect industry, not the public, which has been subjected to high levels of toxic mercury, which accumulates in seafood. Mercury is especially dangerous to pregnant women, infants and children - that's what made the Bush Administration's rule so heinous. The Federal court's reversal of the Bush Administration's illegal mercury rule puts us back on track to address dangerous mercury pollution in the environment."
