Washington, DC - In recognition of the 41st anniversary of Earth Day on April 22, Senator Barbara Boxer (D-CA), Chairman of the Environment and Public Works Committee, released the following statement:
Senator Boxer said: "When Congress established a national Earth Day in 1970, it helped to spur legislation to protect the environment and public health, including the Clean Air Act and Clean Water Act. As we celebrate the 41st Earth Day, laws that have safeguarded children and families for the past four decades are under attack. Although leading public health organizations joined me in successfully defeating GOP efforts to repeal our landmark environmental laws, the fight is not over.
This week also marks the one year anniversary of the BP oil spill, which is another tragic reminder that we must protect the nation's natural resources. On Earth Day -- as well as every other day - I will continue to do everything in my power to protect our environment and the health and safety of all Americans."
