Authorities charge Albuquerque man in late Jan. bank robbery

A 29-year-old Albuquerque man faces a 20-year prison sentence for allegedly robbing a bank late last month.

According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of New Mexico, Andres Manuel Castro Aragon made his initial appearance in federal court on Jan. 27.

Castro Aragon was reportedly slated to appear at a Jan. 31 preliminary and detention hearing, also in response to allegedly taking an unspecified amount of cash from the First Convenience Bank at a Walmart on Coors Boulevard in Albuquerque on Jan. 25.

Fred Federici, U.S. Attorney for the District of New Mexico, explained in a press release issued by his office that Castro Aragon coerced a teller into giving him the money by presenting a demand note insinuating he was armed.

“The U.S. Attorney’s Office is committed to protecting our financial institutions and the people they serve,” Federici said in the release. “Anyone who believes bank robbery is a quick means to easy money should understand that this is a serious crime with severe consequences. That quick robbery means up to 20 years in prison, and more if a gun is used.”

Albuquerque police located the suspect on a pedestrian bridge over I-40 and subsequently arrested him.
