Eight workers at a Pago Pago business have received $23,000 in back wages after a U.S. Department of Labor investigation, a news release said.
The company, Solid Corp., failed to pay the workers for all their hours and also made improper deductions, the labor department said. The company operates Worldwide Cash Station, Worldwide Car and Rental and Worldwide Tours & Travel, Inc.
"Solid Corp. failed to record, count and pay workers for all their time they worked and shortchanged them of their lawfully earned wages,” Wage and Hour Division District Director Terence Trotter said in a statement. “The employer also did not combine all hours worked by staff at their various locations throughout the workweek for overtime purposes. We encourage all employers to review their pay practices and to contact us for information about how to avoid violations.”
The company also illegally deducted meal breaks and lodging costs from workers' pay, according to the release.
The Labor Department's Wage and Hour division has helped more than 190,000 workers and recovered more than $230 million in back wages, the news release said.
For more information, workers can call the agency’s helpline at 866-4US-WAGE (487-9243).
Calls are confidential, regardless of immigration status, and the department can communicate in more than 200 languages.
