There is no greater long-term challenge confronting the world and threatening sustainable development than the climate crisis.
President Biden understands the critical role the United States must play in the global climate effort and has put climate change at the center of U.S. foreign policy, diplomacy, and national security.
President Biden announced at the General Assembly plans to work with Congress on a quadrupling of U.S. international public climate finance by 2024 to over $11 billion, including a six-fold increase of adaptation finance, to scale up the clean energy transition and support vulnerable countries and communities in building climate resilience.
However, greater global actions are needed to address the climate crisis.
The coming decade will be decisive in our work to combat the climate crisis. The United States will continue to call on all nations to bring their commitments and actions in line with the Paris goal of limiting warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius.
Per the Glasgow Climate Pact, we need to encourage countries whose nationally determined contributions are not yet aligned with the Paris temperature goal to strengthen them in 2022.
Together, we must accelerate investment in clean energy technologies and climate-smart agriculture and food systems innovation to improve food security and help raise global climate ambition.
Addressing the climate crisis is an imperative that requires greater coordination and efficiency across the UN system.
As the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change serves as the pre-eminent body on climate change in the UN system, we expect the work of ECOSOC to be fully coordinated and in line with the carefully negotiated outcomes from our climate experts. Importantly, we should not be selectively referring to UNFCCC outcomes or renegotiating such outcomes.
We trust that ECOSOC subsidiary bodies and specialized agencies will help the world deliver on the climate ambition needed to achieve the Paris goal of limiting warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius and the climate-related SDGs.\
