New federal center using artificial intelligence to help the environment

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has established established a center on artificial intelligence to help it gain a better understanding of the environment, a news release said.

It is called the NOAA Center for Artificial Intelligence (NCAI).

"We want to spark conversations, provide space for networking, and encourage information sharing about [artificial intelligence/machine learning] within NOAA and its scientific communities,” one of the organizers of the center, Eric Kihn, said in a statement.

Since 2019, NICAI has held three workshops to encourage sharing of information on artificial intelligence and machine learning, the news release said.

Last year's conference attracted 1,300 participants and featured a speech by featured NOAA Administrator Rick Spinrad, according to the agency.

Numerous projects using artificial intelligence are underway including cameras that use AI technology to help scan and classify protected species through aerial photography.

"Meanwhile, other branches of NOAA have used AI to characterize marine ecosystem health by listening to underwater soundscapes, monitor humpback whale populations from their songs, forecast space weather in real-time, and so much more," the news release said. "Many such projects have benefited from collaborations with industry, including Microsoft, Kitware, Saildrone, Google, as well as with academia."

The 2020 National AI Initiative Act passed by Congress formalized the mandate that NOA implement artificial intelligence technology across climate, ocean, Earth, and space sciences, the news release said.
