DOE seeking Distinguished Scientist Fellows Program nominations with record of 'excellence'

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) is calling for nominations for its Distinguished Scientist Fellows Program.

According to a Jan. 10 DOE press release, DOE fellows are "national laboratory scientists with outstanding records of achievement." Selected nominees are given $1 million in direct funding over three years to support research and projects that align with DOE missions.

"The DOE encourages nominations of individuals from underrepresented groups and is committed to supporting a diverse cadre of investigators and fostering safe, diverse, equitable, and inclusive work, research and funding environments," the DOE said in the release.

The DOE's 17 national laboratories are permitted to submit two nominations; qualified nominees are full-time DOE national laboratory employees with at least 10 years of tenure and demonstrated "scientific excellence in research that is supported by DOE and is relevant to Office of Science research programs."

Other qualifications for the fellowship include: a history of engagement with the academia and university communities; impactful peer-reviewed publications; research field service such as society or advisory work; and mentoring of early-career engineers or scientists.

Nominations must be submitted by 5 p.m. Eastern Standard Time on Monday, March 14.

The DOE Distinguished Scientist Fellows Program is authorized by the America COMPETES Act.
