A joint statement was issued by the U.S. and European Union Energy Council.
The Council was led by United States President Joe Biden and President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen. Threats to the energy supply caused by ongoing tensions between Russia and Ukraine was one theme of the meeting.
The council had its ninth meeting on Feb. 2 in Washington, D.C.
"The Council built on the work announced by President von der Leyen and President Biden on U.S.-EU cooperation on energy security in their Joint Statement of Jan. 28, 2022," a State Department press release said.
The meeting was intended to establish that the US-EU Council is the main transatlantic planning forum pertaining to strategic energy issues. One area that was discussed was the importance of action in order to deal with the gas supply problem in the European Union as well as to ensure the gas supply to Ukraine in the face of growing tensions in that nation. The Council is focused on increasing energy security and improving energy diversification due to the awareness of a quickly moving energy landscape in addition to the ongoing threats to energy security.
Following the meeting, a press release was issued where the council acknowledged that progress toward energy independence and a decrease in emissions would cause market disruptions.
