WASHINGTON, DC - The House Energy and Commerce Committee, chaired by Rep. Fred Upton (R-MI), today heard from Govs. Haley Barbour (R-MS), Gary Herbert (R-UT), and Deval Patrick (D-MA) as they discussed the impact of the new health care law on Medicaid and state budgets and proposed ideas to allow flexibility for states. Prior to the hearing, the Energy and Commerce Committee and Senate Finance Committee released a report outlining that the law’s massive Medicaid expansion will cost states at least $118 billion.
Upton Invites Governors’ Ideas
Herbert: “We’re going to have to cut from some other programsor raise taxes."
Barbour: “It’s going to take a very big tax increase."
Herbert: “Let states and Governors deal with it."
