WASHINGTON -- Amid growing concerns in rural communities about the Obama administration’s environmental policies, Republican members of the Senate Agriculture Committee continue to press for a meeting with Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Administrator Gina McCarthy.
Two weeks ago, the Republican Members of the Senate Agriculture Committee sent a letter requesting a meeting with McCarthy to discuss a wide-ranging list of regulatory issues that have the potential to impact agriculture and rural economies. To date, there has been no response from the EPA Administrator.
“Given the intensity with which the Obama Administration is increasing regulatory burdens and costs on farmers, ranchers, businesses and other job creators, we must pursue answers to the questions our constituencies are raising. The EPA must explain and be held accountable for the many far-reaching and difficult policies it is advocating," said Senator Thad Cochran (R-Miss.), ranking Republican on the Senate Agriculture Committee.
The Senators’ May 23 letter to McCarthy requested a meeting at which they can share the concerns of their constituents regarding EPA regulations and policies affecting agriculture and rural communities and businesses. The letter was signed by Cochran, Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.), Pat Roberts (R-Kan.), Saxby Chambliss (R-Ga.), John Boozman (R-Ark.), John Hoeven (R-N.D.), Mike Johanns (R-Neb.), Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) and John Thune (R-S.D.).
