WASHINGTON, DC - House Energy and Commerce Committee Chairman Fred Upton (R-MI) today urged the Senate to follow the House’s action and repeal the CLASS Act after the House approved the Fiscal Responsibility and Retirement Security Act, H.R. 1173, with a bipartisan vote of 267 to 159.
“During the health care debate, many unbiased analysts and even President Obama’s own experts repeatedly warned the law’s authors that the program was structured to collapse and leave taxpayers holding the bag. Yet they moved forward with it anyway and claimed credit for at least $80 billion in false savings in order to sell an unpopular bill. The budget gimmicks behind the CLASS program are a prime example of why Americans are losing faith in Washington.
“I believe we have to start over on long-term care reform -an issue that will affect millions of Americans as they or a loved one need care. But first, we must erase a program that we know will not work; a program that was never structured to work, and that we could never afford.
“I urge my colleagues in the Senate to follow the House’s lead and repeal the failed CLASS program so that we can move forward with reforms that work," said Upton.
