WASHINGTON, DC - Today, the House Energy and Commerce Committee announced its hearing schedule for the week of June 4. The Subcommittee on Energy and Power will examine the Environmental Protection Agency’s enforcement philosophy with Former EPA Region 6 Administrator Al Armendariz. The Subcommittee on Communications and Technology will discuss audio content in an ever-changing marketplace. The Subcommittee on Oversight and Investigations will continue its efforts to combat government waste with an examination of Medicare fraud and abuse. Lastly, the Subcommittee on Health will examine the role of accreditation of medical imaging and radiation therapy technologists to maximize patient safety and reduce unnecessary duplication of services.
On Wednesday, June 6, the Subcommittee on Energy and Power will hold a hearing on “EPA Priorities and Practices." Former EPA Region 6 Administrator Al Armendariz will testify. Energy and Commerce members wrote to Armendariz in April seeking more information about EPA’s enforcement philosophy, strategies, and procedures following the release of an online video revealing statements Armendariz made in 2010. The subcommittee will examine EPA’s recent regulatory actions and discuss how the agency has been exerting its statutory authority under various environmental statutes. Also on Wednesday, June 6, the Subcommittee on Communications and Technology will hold a hearing on “The Future of Audio." This hearing will examine how advances in consumer electronics - as well as broadcasting, the Internet, and other communications platforms - are changing the way Americans gain access to and consume audio content. On Friday, June 8, the Subcommittee on Oversight and Investigations will hold a hearing on “Medicare Contractors’ Efforts to Fight Fraud - Moving Beyond ‘Pay and Chase.’" Medicare fraud costs taxpayers untold billions of dollars each year. To fight fraud, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) contracts with a number of private entities to conduct program integrity activities such as preventing, detecting, and recovering fraudulent Medicare payments. Next Friday’s hearing will examine CMS’ oversight of its Medicare contractors and work to identify ways to enhance the contractors’ effectiveness at preventing and combating fraud. Also on Friday, June 8, the Subcommittee on Health will hold a hearing on “Examining the Appropriateness of Standards for Medical Imaging and Radiation Therapy Technologists." This hearing will examine the current state of accreditation for medical imaging and radiation therapy technologists, attempt to identify areas of deficiency, and discuss the role of accreditation to maximize patient safety and reduce unnecessary duplication of services.
