WASHINGTON, DC - The House Committee on Energy and Commerce today announced its schedule for the week of March 11, 2013. On Wednesday, the Oversight and Investigations Subcommittee will continue its oversight of the nation’s nuclear weapons complex. Also on Wednesday, the Health Subcommittee will discuss the increased burden the president’s health care law is placing on jobs and the economy. On Thursday, the Environment and the Economy Subcommittee will review progress of the CFATS Program, and the Communications and Technology Subcommittee will conduct oversight of the First Responder Network Authority (FirstNet) and Emergency Communications to help ensure Americans can be adequately protected in times of emergency. Finally, on Friday, the Health Subcommittee has rescheduled its hearing to examine how the health care law is increasing health insurance premiums.
On Wednesday, March 13, the Subcommittee on Oversight and Investigations will hold a hearing on “DOE Management and Oversight of Its Nuclear Weapons Complex: Lessons of the Y-12 Security Failure." The subcommittee will continue its bipartisan examination of the Department of Energy’s management and oversight of our nation’s nuclear security enterprise with a hearing to examine the management and administrative challenges confronting DOE in the wake of the July 12, 2012, security breakdown at the Y-12 National Security Complex. Bipartisan Energy and Commerce Committee leaders recently requested information from DOE and the National Nuclear Security Administration concerning the agency’s plans to address the challenges identified by the Y-12 incident. Members will hear from officials and other authorities who will provide perspective for the members and who may elaborate on ways to improve and sustain safety and security within DOE’s nuclear weapons complex.as they are posted.
Also on Wednesday, March 13, the Subcommittee on Health will hold a hearing on “Obamacare’s Impact on Jobs." The hearing will analyze the impact of Obamacare on job availability and employer-sponsored health coverage. The subcommittee will hear expert testimony on how the law will affect the small business job market as well as workers’ hours and overall compensation.as they are posted.
On Thursday, March 14, the Subcommittee on Environment and the Economy will hold a hearing on “The Chemical Facility Anti-Terrorism Standards (CFATS) Program: A Progress Update." The hearing will review progress of the CFATS Program in helping facilities implement security plans to protect against terrorists threats. Rand Beers, Department of Homeland Security Undersecretary of the National Protection and Programs Directorate, will testify along with the Government Accountability Office and other regulated and interested stakeholders.as they are posted.
Also on Thursday, March 14, the Subcommittee on Communications and Technology will hold a hearing on “Oversight of FirstNet and Emergency Communications." Created by the Middle Class Tax Relief and Job Creation Act of 2012, FirstNet is tasked with building and maintaining a nationwide, interoperable broadband public safety network. Members will hear from FirstNet, states and private sector entities that want to partner to explore ways to ensure the connectivity, reliability, and security of this nationwide public safety network. The hearing will also discuss other emergency communications systems used to communicate with the general public.as they are posted.
On Friday, March 15, the Subcommittee on Health has rescheduled its hearing on “Unaffordable: Impact of Obamacare on Americans’ Health Insurance Premiums." Members will examine looming premium increases that will unfairly hit young adults and middle class families as a result of the health care law. Although the law is not expected to be fully implemented until 2014, Americans are already beginning to face the negative and unaffordable consequences of Obamacare. Witnesses will discuss studies and analyses of how the law is expected to impact premiums.as they are posted.
