Energy and Commerce Committee Announces Cybersecurity Doubleheader

The following press release was published by the House Committee on Energy and Commerce on May 14, 2013. It is reproduced in full below.

The Committee on Energy and Commerce has scheduled a full committee hearing for Tuesday, May 21, 2013, at 10 a.m. in room 2123 of the Rayburn House Office Building. The hearing is entitled “Cyber Threats and Security Solutions." Witnesses to be announced.

The full committee hearing will focus on steps the federal government and the private sector are taking to bolster the security of our nation’s critical infrastructure and mitigate exposure to cyber attacks. Members will hear perspectives on the president’s Executive Order to improve critical infrastructure cybersecurity, including the latest on the order’s implementation and the administration’s development of a voluntary cybersecurity framework. Additionally, members will examine best practices to better protect our nation’s critical infrastructure from cyber threats, including enhanced information sharing, public-private partnerships, and greater industry collaboration.

“There is no more important role for the federal government than ensuring the safety and security of the American people. The further we move into the 21st century, the greater the urgency to securing America’s cyber networks, which is paramount to the mission of protecting the American people," said Energy and Commerce Committee Chairman Fred Upton (R-MI) and Vice Chairman Marsha Blackburn (R-TN). “Policies adopted today must be strong, yet provide flexibility as threats to our cyber networks will undoubtedly evolve as fast as new technologies are brought online."

The Majority Memorandum, a witness list, and witness testimony for the full committee hearing will be available here as they are posted.

Additionally, the Subcommittee on Communications and Technology has scheduled a hearing for Tuesday, May 21, 2013, at 2 p.m. in room 2123 of the Rayburn House Office Building. The hearing is entitled “Cybersecurity: An Examination of the Communications Supply Chain." The subcommittee will examine how the communications industry addresses the security of its supply chain. Witnesses to be announced.

“We often take for granted how vital communications networks and devices are in our day-to-day lives, whether for personal or professional use or in times of emergency," said Communication and Technology Subcommittee Chairman Greg Walden (R-OR). “It is imperative we examine what communications providers are doing to ensure the security of the communications supply chain so business-as-usual can continue for all Americans."

The Majority Memorandum, a witness list, and witness testimony for the subcommittee hearing will be available here as they are posted.
