WASHINGTON, DC - The House Committee on Energy and Commerce today announced its hearing schedule for the week of Oct. 28, 2013. Beginning on Tuesday, the Energy and Power Subcommittee will hold a legislative hearing on the North American Energy Infrastructure Act, an important component of the architecture of abundance to realize our energy potential. Also on Tuesday, the Oversight and Investigations Subcommittee will examine the effects of the Environmental Protection Agency’s regulatory actions on jobs and local communities particularly reliant upon coal. Finally, on Wednesday, Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Kathleen Sebelius will testify at the second full committee hearing overseeing the rocky rollout of the president’s health care law.
On Tuesday, Oct. 29, the Subcommittee on Energy and Power will hold a legislative hearing on “The North American Energy Infrastructure Act," which will modernize and reform the approval process for cross-border energy projects. The bipartisan legislation, introduced by committee Chairman Fred Upton (R-MI) and Rep. Gene Green (D-TX) will create a clear regulatory approval process for U.S. cross-border oil pipelines, natural gas pipelines, and electric transmission lines, replacing the current system set forth in a series of Executive Orders created in an ad hoc fashion over multiple administrations. Also on Tuesday, Oct. 29, the Subcommittee on Oversight and Investigations will hold a hearing on “EPA’s Regulatory Threat to Affordable, Reliable Energy: The Perspective of Coal Communities." The subcommittee is continuing its investigation into the effect of EPA’s actions on jobs and the economy with a look at how the agency’s regulations are affecting local coal communities. Community leaders, workers, and others will testify about their experience with EPA’s regulatory impact on local families, businesses, and governments. Finally, on Wednesday, Oct. 30, the Energy and Commerce Committee will conduct a full committee hearing on “PPACA Implementation Failures: Answers from HHS." In the months leading up to the health care law’s October 1 launch, top administration officials and lead contractors appeared before the committee assuring that everything was “on track." However, the rollout of the health care law has been deeply troubled with countless Americans unable to access even the most basic of information on the healthcare.gov website. Next Wednesday’s hearing will provide members an opportunity to hear directly from HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius in the continued effort to find out what went wrong, what did the administration know, and when did they know it.as they are posted.
