WASHINGTON, DC - Communications and Technology Subcommittee Chairman Greg Walden (R-OR) today announced the panel’s upcoming schedule for November. The subcommittee is set to examine the 5GHz spectrum band as well as continue its oversight of FirstNet.
The subcommittee has rescheduled its hearing on “Challenges and Opportunities in the 5 GHz Spectrum Band." for Wednesday, Nov. 13, 2013, at 2 p.m. in room 2123 of the Rayburn House Office Building. Witness testimony will also be posted at the same link when available.
During the week of Nov. 18, members will continue their oversight of the build out of FirstNet and other emergency communications networks. FirstNet is a nationwide, interoperable broadband public safety network created by the Middle Class Tax Relief and Job Creation Act of 2012. Members will receive a status update from FirstNet and private sector entities that are working to improve the connectivity, reliability, and security of this nationwide public safety network. Additionally, members will review other emergency communications technologies to better understand how their development can improve the capabilities of first responders across the nation.
“Ongoing oversight of this vital communications network is critical to ensuring that our first responders have the connectivity and reliability they need to adequately protect the public," said Walden. “We must do everything we can to make sure this network is built properly and effectively, with an efficient use of taxpayer dollars. While their work is ongoing, it is important that the FirstNet board and stakeholders alike continue to move forward and keep pace with continuing technological innovation."
The subcommittee previously met in March to receive an update on this taxpayer funded $7 billion project. More information about the subcommittee’s hearing the week of Nov. 18, including date and location, will be posted here when available.
