The Subcommittee on Health, chaired by Rep. Joe Pitts (R-PA), has scheduled a hearing for Tuesday, April 8, 2014, at 10:15 a.m. in room 2322 of the Rayburn House Office Building. The hearing is entitled “Examining the Implementation of the Tobacco Control Act." Witnesses to be announced.
This year marks five years since the Tobacco Control Act became law, which for the first time provided FDA the authority to regulate tobacco products. Subcommittee members will review the agency’s implementation of a number of key aspects of the law. For example, a September 2013 Government Accountability Office report found that FDA’s Center for Tobacco Products (CTP) lacks an effective and efficient time frame for reviewing new tobacco products, causing significant delays in the process. The report found that CTP took more than a year and a half to complete initial steps in the review process and FDA has spent less than half of the funds it collected through new user fees.as they are posted.
