Look Ahead: Committee Announces Hearing and Vote Schedule for the Week of April 28

WASHINGTON, DC - The House Energy and Commerce Committee today announced its hearing and vote schedule for the week of April 28, 2014. The committee will examine the growing concerns regarding prescription drug and heroin abuse, continue its review of the Chemicals in Commerce Act, and discuss and how 21st century technology can benefit patients. The full committee will also vote on a set of energy bills to increase natural gas exports and improve energy efficiency in federal buildings and schools.

On Tuesday, April 29, the Subcommittee on Oversight and Investigations will hold a hearing on “Examining the Growing Problems of Prescription Drug and Heroin Abuse." The subcommittee will review growing concerns regarding heroin and prescription opioid abuse and related deaths. The Majority Memorandum and witness list can be found here. Also on Tuesday, the Subcommittee on Environment and the Economy will hold a hearing on an updated draft of the Chemicals in Commerce Act. The subcommittee is continuing its work to reform and improve the decades-old Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA). Subcommittee Chairman John Shimkus (R-IL) unveiled a draft of the Chemicals in Commerce Act after the subcommittee’s extensive review of the current law. The draft legislation reforms the law to ensure a transparent, workable, and risk-based process for chemical review and regulation. Finally, on Tuesday, the full committee will convene for opening statements for the markup of the following energy bills:

H.R. 2689, the Energy Savings Through Public-Private Partnerships Act, authored by Reps. Cory Gardner (R-CO) and Peter Welch (D-VT), facilitates the use of energy savings performance contracts and utility energy service contracts to utilize private sector investment to upgrade the energy and water efficiency of federal facilities without any up-front cost to taxpayers. The bill helps to reduce federal energy costs while saving money, creating jobs, and reducing waste.

H.R. 4092, the Streamlining Energy Efficiency for Schools Act of 2014, authored by Rep. Matt Cartwright (D-PA), will help our nation’s schools reduce energy costs and save taxpayer dollars. The bill establishes a single online resource within DOE to disseminate information regarding available federal programs and financing mechanisms to develop energy efficiency, distributed generation, and energy retrofitting projects for schools.

On Thursday, May 1, the Subcommittee on Health will hold a hearing on “Telehealth to Digital Medicine: How 21st Century Technology Can Benefit Patients." The subcommittee will discuss what opportunities advances in technology and telemedicine present for improving access to and quality of health care for patients. Members have worked on a bipartisan basis on a number of bills including H.R. 3077, the Tele-MED Act introduced by Rep. Devin Nunes (R-CA) and Health Subcommittee Ranking Member Rep. Frank Pallone (D-NJ); H.R. 3306, the Telehealth Enhancement Act introduced by subcommittee member Rep. Gregg Harper (R-MS) and Rep. Peter Welch (D-VT); and H.R. 3750, the Telehealth Modernization Act introduced by Rep. Doris Matsui (D-CA) and subcommittee member Rep. Bill Johnson (R-OH).as they are posted.
