WASHINGTON, DC - The Subcommittee on Energy and Power, chaired by Rep. Ed Whitfield (R-KY), has scheduled a hearing to review EPA’s proposed greenhouse gas regulations for existing power plants on Thursday, June 19, 2014, at 10:00 a.m. in room 2123 of the Rayburn House Office Building. The hearing is entitled, “EPA’s Proposed Carbon Dioxide Regulations for Power Plants," and Janet McCabe, EPA’s Assistant Administrator for the Office of Air and Radiation, will be the sole witness.
President Obama’s EPA last week unveiled a plan to reduce carbon dioxide emissions from existing U.S. power plants; the agency previously released a rule affecting new plants. Committee members have voiced concerns over EPA’s unprecedented reach, and the potential of this plan to increase electricity prices, eliminate U.S. jobs, and threaten grid reliability, with no meaningful effect on future climate patterns. Next week, members will have the opportunity to question Assistant Administrator McCabe about the details of EPA’s power plant proposal and its effect on jobs, the economy, and the environment.
“Under the guise of regulating power plants, President Obama’s agency is seeking to expand its regulatory reach over the entire electricity sector. It is crucial that Congress examine EPA’s expansive interpretation of its legal authority, the scope of these proposed regulations, and their potential impact on the future of American energy," said Whitfield. “There are highly controversial legal and policy issues surrounding this proposal, and the American public deserves a full understanding of the consequences of EPA’s regulatory actions for jobs and affordable energy. I look forward to hearing directly from Assistant Administrator McCabe as we continue our oversight of this administration’s radical climate change agenda."
