WASHINGTON, DC - The House Energy and Commerce Committee today released its latest white paper in the 21st Century Cures initiative exploring how advances in technology can accelerate the discovery, development, and delivery cycle of innovative new cures and treatments. The committee will host its second 21st Century Cures roundtable next Tuesday, June 24, 2014, to discuss what steps Congress can take to bridge the gap between these advances and the regulatory policies that govern them, ultimately advancing digital and personalized health care. The paper highlights, “Biomedical research and therapeutic innovation are happening at lightning speed alongside of, and supported by, advancements in digital and personalized medicine. Genomics, data analytics, health information, and other constantly evolving data sources, technologies, and platforms have already fundamentally transformed many aspects of our health care delivery system. However, in some areas, the committee understands that significant gaps remain between practice and potential."
Regarding the latest white paper, full committee Chairman Fred Upton (R-MI) commented, “Advancements in technology and communications provide a gateway of opportunity as we work to accelerate the discovery, development, and delivery cycle for innovative cures and treatments. What steps must we take to further develop digital and personalized medicine to improve patient care and transform our health care system to one that embraces today’s technology? Digital technology has remarkable potential to bring our health care system into the 21st Century and beyond. As we work toward a path to cures, we must always be improving and evolving, embracing the technologies of today as we pursue the treatments for tomorrow."
The committee’s latest white paper seeks ideas about how to improve the entire digital health care landscape, how communications technologies can be used throughout the cycle of cures to improve patient care, and what role Congress can play in this process. The committee welcomes all ideas, large and small, to be shared with cures@mail.house.gov by July 22, 2014. 21st Century Cures is a truly collaborative effort.
