WHAT THEY’RE SAYING: Support Builds for Employee Health Care Protection Act Ahead of House Vote

The following press release was published by the House Committee on Energy and Commerce on Sept. 11, 2014. It is reproduced in full below.

WASHINGTON, DC - The House of Representatives will vote today on H.R. 3522, the Employee Health Care Protection Act, authored by Rep. Bill Cassidy (R-LA). The bill helps to protect American workers from the president’s #BrokenPromises by allowing health insurance plans currently available on the group market to continue to be offered through 2019. Ahead of the vote, a wide range of stakeholders voiced support for the bill and praised the committee for working to prevent the administration from doing any more damage to our nation’s health care.

“The president and his allies in Congress tried to sell this health law to the American people by making false promises. He said that families would save an average of $2,500 per year on premiums, that Americans could keep the health plans that they have and like, and that nobody would lose access to their trusted physicians. Each of these promises has been broken," commented Dr. Cassidy. “The Employee Health Care Protection Act is a commonsense proposal to protect Americans from the president’s broken promises. It will allow American families to save money, to have access to affordable health care choices, and will raise wages for workers."

Below is a sampling of the growing support for H.R. 3522:

Americans for Tax Reform

“H.R. 3522 actually implements for workers what President Obama famously promised about his signature healthcare law: ‘if you like your plan, you can keep it.’ Millions of Americans on the individual health insurance market now know this was not true, and those who get health insurance at work will find themselves in the same boat this year."

Concerned Women of America

“This legislation provides Americans with more flexibility. It also ensures Americans are paying for coverage they need and are not being forced to accept coverage for services they don’t."

Frontiers of Freedom

“The Employee Health Care Protection Act would allow American workers to keep their health care plan if they like it, a promise that President Obama made himself when selling Obamacare. Unfortunately he has broken that promise. I encourage representatives from both parties to support this commonsense piece of legislation which will lower costs, expand access to healthcare and increase wages for American workers."

National Association of Manufacturers

“The Employee Healthcare Protection Act would allow employers the flexibility to retain the healthcare plan they offered before the burdensome requirements of the Affordable Care Act forced them to alter their coverage and increase costs.“

National Federation of Independent Business

“The National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB), the nation’s leading small-business organization, supports H.R. 3522, the Employee Health Plan Protection Act of 2013, which would provide an opportunity for small-business owners and employees to keep the health insurance plans they currently enjoy. … PPACA continues to cause significant problems for the small business community, and has failed to address the number one problem small businesses face - the rising cost of health insurance. Congress needs to focus on providing relief for small businesses from the costly and burdensome provisions in the law that are already negatively impacting their businesses and employees."

National Taxpayers Union

“By removing the obstacle of costly new requirements, previously available group insurance plans could continue to provide the low-cost coverage that best suited consumers. At the same time, this would increase choice in the insurance marketplace by extending the availability of 2013 plans regardless of whether or not groups were previously enrolled in those plans. Doing so would help reduce the ongoing uncertainty among both employees and employers who feared the loss of their preferred coverage."

Restore America’s Values

“Your legislation goes far in restoring a measure of common sense and citizen choice and in making good the often repeated promise of President Obama."
