WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Energy and Commerce Committee’s bipartisan 21st Century Cures initiative maintains momentum this month as members continue hosting roundtables in their home states. Chairman Fred Upton (R-MI) is hosting an event in Kalamazoo, Michigan, tomorrow, Tuesday, October 7, 2014, and Rep. Renee Ellmers (R-NC) will host an event Thursday, October 9, 2014, in Research Triangle Park, North Carolina.

Upton’s event has an all-star lineup including Director of the National Institutes of Health, Dr. Francis Collins, Director of the Center for Devices and Radiological Health at the Food and Drug Administration, Dr. Jeff Shuren, Health Subcommittee Vice Chairman Michael C. Burgess, M.D. (R-TX), and leading health professionals from the Michigan area. The roundtable will be held at the Western Michigan University Homer Stryker M.D. School of Medicine in Kalamazoo. “This has been a truly collaborative and bipartisan effort from the very beginning," said Upton. “Michigan has an important role to play in this effort to provide more hope for families, and better treatments and cures for patients."

Ellmers’ roundtable will be held at the Hamner Institutes for Health Sciences in Research Triangle Park, North Carolina. Ellmers will be joined by senior officials at FDA, NIH, HHS, and local universities and biopharmaceutical companies to discuss ways future legislation can help to accelerate the pace of cures and treatments in America. “I look forward to leading a discussion on Thursday that will allow for us to explore how future innovation can answer the challenges presented to our healthcare professionals and government agencies," said Ellmers. “I am excited to bring the Energy & Commerce Committee’s 21st Century Cures initiative to North Carolina, as the Research Triangle Park is home to industry leaders and health innovators who are working to discover, develop and deliver groundbreaking new cures and treatments."
