21st Century Cures Renews Commitment to Biomedical Research in America

#Cures2015: “A positive change in how American biomedical research will be conducted"

H.R. 6, the 21st Century Cures Act, includes vital resources for the National Institutes of Health and important policy changes that will allow America’s most promising scientists and researchers to unleash the next generation of cures and therapies. As Greg Satell writes in Forbes, “science is what made America a technological superpower" and the 21st Century Cures Act would help to “renew our commitment to science and competitiveness." The Alliance for Aging Research adds, “the pace of scientific discovery since the turn of the century has accelerated at a speed that was not possible a generation ago. [H.R. 6] was developed after the realization by leaders in Congress that the current health care innovation infrastructure needed improvement to accommodate those advances in science."

New Legislation in Congress Could Help Restore America to Scientific Excellence

From the moon landing to the decoding of the human genome, science is what made America a technological superpower. Whether it’s advanced microchips, the Internet, or miracle cures, the world looks to the U.S. for a large proportion of breakthroughs and public funding has been at the center of it all.

Yet lately there seems to be a veritable war on science, with politicians eagerly pandering by questioning the age of the earth, crusading to cut scientific budgets and calling evolution and the Big Bang lies from the pit of hell. The OECD reports that China is now poised to overtake the US in scientific funding.

Yet the tide may be beginning to turn. The 21st Century Cures Act, a new bill that would restore funding to the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and streamline drug approvals, just passed the House Energy and Commerce Committee by a unanimous vote of 51-0. It’s about time. After over a decade of neglect, we desperately need to renew our commitment to science and competitiveness. …

The 21st Century Cures Act: A Critical Bill to Improve the Future of Medical Research in America

The 21st Century Cures Act represents a positive change in how American biomedical research will be conducted and streamlines the processes intended to deliver new medical cures and treatment to patients. Currently being considered for a vote on the floor of the U.S. House of Representatives later this month, the bill, also known as H.R. 6, has been a bipartisan effort, passing out of the House Energy & Commerce Committee in May by a vote of 51-0.

The pace of scientific discovery since the turn of the century has accelerated at a speed that was not possible a generation ago. This bill was developed after the realization by leaders in Congress that the current health care innovation infrastructure needed improvement to accommodate these advances in science. H.R. 6 removes barriers to research collaboration, helps modernize clinical trials, facilitates patient input into the research and development process, encourages more young scientists to pursue careers in research, and authorizes an additional $10 billion for research funding at the National Institutes of Health. …
