WASHINGTON, DC -Bipartisan leaders of the House Energy and Commerce Committee today requested information from the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) and the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) regarding protections for consumers following data breaches. As more and more Americans are affected by major security breaches, the leaders encouraged the agencies to examine all options available to consumers to protect themselves against the possible financial consequences of a breach and make sure consumers are aware of these options.
“It may be possible to streamline the process to reduce fraud following a breach. Therefore, we are writing to learn more about consumer-friendly post-breach protections, including whether the process of activating and inactivating a credit freeze can be made more efficient and less costly," wrote Energy and Commerce Committee Chairman Fred Upton (R-MI) and Ranking Member Frank Pallone, Jr. (D-NJ), Commerce, Manufacturing, and Trade Subcommittee Chairman Michael C. Burgess, M.D. (R-TX) and Ranking Member Jan Schakowsky (D-IL), and Oversight and Investigations Subcommittee Chairman Tim Murphy (R-PA) and Ranking Member Diana DeGette (D-CO).
The leaders requested a briefing by each agency by July 20, 2015, on post-breach protections for consumers.
