Pallone Commends Move to Reduce Price of Calls from Prison

The following press release was published by the House Committee on Energy and Commerce on Sept. 30, 2015. It is reproduced in full below.

Energy and Commerce Committee Ranking Member Frank Pallone, Jr. (D-NJ) issued the following statement today applauding Federal Communications Commission (FCC) Chairman Tom Wheeler for directing the FCC to approve new rules designed to lower prisoner phone call bills at the Commission's October meeting:

“I have long believed that inmates should be able to remain in contact with their families through more affordable and competitive means. I applaud the FCC for its commitment to reforming these policies that too often disproportionately affect detainees with minimal financial resources. Connecting with family and friends also allows inmates to maintain a sense of community and look towards a rehabilitated life on the outside, which benefits society in the long-term. I am proud that that my home state of New Jersey has the lowest rates in the country, but I look forward to ensuring that people across the country have the same advantages."
