WASHINGTON, DC - House Energy and Commerce Committee leaders today announced that the committee’s comprehensive review on concussions will commence with a roundtable discussion on Monday, January 25. The roundtable, which will bring together experts from the medical, military, athletic, and research communities, will serve as a launching pad for the committee’s review to study the causes, effects, and treatments of concussions and other head trauma.
“There’s a lot we just don’t know about head injuries - and having a thoughtful and frank discussion with a diverse group of leading experts will help set the stage for this important review. Our goal is to work toward a more complete understanding of concussions and head trauma. As we have already seen these last few years, greater awareness of concussions matters - especially for our youth in Michigan and across the nation," said Energy and Commerce Committee Chairman Fred Upton (R-MI).
Oversight and Investigations Subcommittee Chairman Tim Murphy (R-PA), added, “Concussions are a major cause of medical complications, disability and death among all age groups. The more we learn about concussions and head trauma, the more we know that the ‘shake it off’ approach of yesteryear caused more risk and damage. We clearly must improve prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of traumatic brain injury and bringing together experts from across the country will have meaningful impact for every American family. With this roundtable forum, we will build a strong foundation of knowledge to help guide future action."
“For many years, we have worked to ensure that patients, including those with concussions, benefit from state-of-the-art practices and technologies. We will continue this effort, using this roundtable to improve health care for all Americans," said Health Subcommittee Chairman Joseph R. Pitts (R-PA).
“Having seen patients for nearly three decades, I understand how important it is to make sure that we have the best understanding and knowledge about all medical situations. While we know the situations that leave people more prone to head trauma, we are less sure about how to best diagnose and treat them. This review will help us take a step forward in bridging the knowledge gap and providing better care for all patients," added Commerce, Manufacturing, and Trade Subcommittee Chairman Michael C. Burgess, M.D. (R-TX).
The roundtable will take place on Monday, Jan. 25, 2016 in room 2123 of the Rayburn House Office Building, beginning at 2:00 PM. The discussion will be led by Oversight and Investigations Subcommittee Chairman Murphy.
