House Continues Efforts to Repeal Obamacare

The following press release was published by the House Committee on Energy and Commerce on Feb. 2, 2016. It is reproduced in full below.

WASHINGTON, DC - The House of Representatives today attempted to override the president’s veto of H.R. 3762, the Restoring Americans’ Healthcare Freedom Reconciliation Act. H.R. 3762 was the first bill that repealed Obamacare to reach the president’s desk. The action follows up on last month’s vote and is part of the ongoing effort to pave the way to institute real, patient-centered reforms.

Energy and Commerce Committee Chairman Fred Upton (R-MI) is a co-author of the Patient Choice, Affordability, Responsibility, and Empowerment (CARE) Act - a bicameral legislative plan that repeals Obamacare and replaces it with commonsense, patient-focused reforms that reduce health care costs and increase access to affordable, high-quality care. Upton co-authored the plan with Senate Finance Chairman Orrin Hatch (R-UT) and Sen. Richard Burr (R-NC).

Chairman Upton commented, “Folks want a fresh, forward-looking approach that embraces innovation, puts patients first, and delivers on real health care solutions. We need to be looking to ideas like the Patient CARE Act to make these ideas for ‘replace’ a reality."

The Patient CARE Act provides a legislative roadmap to repeal the president’s health care law and replace the law with commonsense measures that would:

* Establish sustainable, patient-focused reforms

* Modernize Medicaid to provide better coverage and care to patients

* Reduce defensive medicine and rein in frivolous lawsuits

* Increase health care price transparency to empower consumers and patients

* Reduce distortions in the tax code that drive up health care costs

* Empower small businesses and individuals with purchasing power
