The Subcommittee on Commerce, Manufacturing, and Trade, chaired by Rep. Michael C. Burgess, M.D. (R-TX), has scheduled a hearing for Thursday, April 14, at 10 a.m. in room 2123 of the Rayburn House Office Building. The hearing is entitled, “NHTSA Oversight." National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) Administrator Mark Rosekind is expected to testify in addition to other witnesses.
Members will continue oversight over NHTSA and examine various issues related to auto safety. The subcommittee will assess NHTSA’s progress in implementing the committee’s motor vehicle safety provisions included in the FAST Act, the long-term highway bill that passed the House late last year. Additionally, members will look into NHTSA’s efforts to work collaboratively with the auto industry to remove defective vehicles from the road, and discuss NHTSA’s ability to keep pace with advanced automotive technologies.
“21st century technology has revolutionized automotive technologies in ways that we have never seen before. NHTSA has an incredibly important job and it’s imperative the agency is keeping pace with groundbreaking technologies to keep folks around the country safe on the road. We are reminded of NHTSA’s critical role in ensuring consumer safety as the tenth death nationally from the Takata airbag recall occurred in Texas this week," said Chairman Burgess. “We’re looking forward to receiving an update from Administrator Rosekind on NHTSA’s progress implementing the highway bill and their ongoing efforts to keep defective vehicles off the road and the driving public safe."
