WASHINGTON, DC - The Subcommittee on Oversight and Investigations, chaired by Rep. Tim Murphy (R-PA), has scheduled a hearing for Tuesday, April 19, 2016, at 10:00 a.m. in room 2123 of the Rayburn House Office Building. The hearing is entitled, “Deciphering the Debate Over Encryption: Industry and Law Enforcement Perspectives."
The subcommittee will examine issues related to the ongoing debate surrounding encryption, paying particular attention to the intersection of the benefits associated with strong encryption and the needs of law enforcement. The hearing comes on the heels of the creation of a bipartisan encryption-working group, in conjunction with the House Judiciary Committee, to examine the complicated legal and policy issues surrounding the encryption debate.
“The encryption debate is an important one and it is imperative for the public to be engaged. There’s a delicate balance between the need for strong, secure, and effective encryption and solutions that permit law enforcement to protect the American people," said Energy and Commerce Committee Chairman Fred Upton (R-MI) and Chairman Murphy. “Next week’s hearing marks an important step and we look forward to a constructive and important dialogue to help advance the deabte."
