WASHINGTON, DC - The Subcommittee on Environment and the Economy, chaired by Rep. John Shimkus (R-IL), has scheduled a hearing for Thursday, April 21, at 10 a.m. in room 2123 of the Rayburn House Office Building. The hearing is entitled, “EPA’s Brownfields Program: Empowering Cleanup and Encouraging Economic Redevelopment."
The Brownfields program provides grants and technical assistance to states, local communities, tribes, and other stakeholders in order to assess, cleanup, and restore once contaminated areas to beneficial use. Members will examine the many successes and also look at areas where the program could be improved. The subcommittee will hear from a panel of expert witnesses, including officials from EPA and the Association of the State and Territorial Solid Waste Management Officials.
Subcommittee Chairman Shimkus commented, “EPA’s Brownfields program has the capacity to breathe new life into both the environment and the economy, but we must ensure that swift site redevelopment is not hindered by bureaucratic inefficiency. Our work will ensure that cleaning up hazardous sites is not a choice between the environment and the American taxpayer."
The Majority Memorandum, a witness list, and witness testimony will be available here as they are posted. Related Items
