HEARING: #SubOversight to Examine Security of Bioresearch Labs NEXT WEEK

The following press release was published by the House Committee on Energy and Commerce on April 14, 2016. It is reproduced in full below.

WASHINGTON, DC - The Subcommittee on Oversight and Investigations, chaired by Rep. Tim Murphy (R-PA), has announced a hearing for Wednesday, April 20, 2016, at 10:15 a.m. in room 2322 of the Rayburn House Office Building, entitled “How Secure are U.S. Bioresearch Labs? Preventing the Next Safety Lapse." The hearing will focus on the need for stronger oversight of high-containment laboratories.

The subcommittee will feature testimony from several government agencies about what policies they currently have in place, and how they conduct oversight of high-containment laboratories.

“In recent years, safety and security lapses at high-containment laboratories have become far too common. The subcommittee has taken a close look at several of these incidents. Based on what we’ve learned, there is no question more comprehensive policies and better oversight of these laboratories are needed," said Murphy. “One lapse is too many. And unless the situation is fixed, it’s just a matter of time before someone gets hurt."
