WASHINGTON, DC - House Energy and Commerce Committee Ranking Member Frank Pallone, Jr. (D-NJ) and Commerce, Manufacturing, and Trade Subcommittee Ranking Member Jan Schakowsky (D-IL) today responded to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s (NHTSA) announcement that it is expanding the recall of an additional estimated 35 million Takata airbags.
“After many months of our continued urging, Takata and NHTSA are finally expanding the airbag recalls to cover a type of airbag that we have long known is deadly," said Pallone and Schakowsky. “However, we’re concerned that it is simply taking NHTSA and Takata too much time to act on these recalls. This type of action has resulted in information, which consumers desperately want, slowly dripping out. Unfortunately, this is likely not the last Takata airbag recall announcement since questions still remain about whether other types of ammonium nitrate airbags are safe.
