WASHINGTON, DC - The House Committee on Energy and Commerce today announced its hearing and vote schedule for the week of June 13.

On Tuesday, the Subcommittee on Oversight and Investigations will hold a hearing examining the U.S. public health response to the growing concern of antibiotic-resistant bacteria. The hearing comes after recent headlines declared, “The superbug that doctors have been dreading just reached the U.S." Government experts will testify on the current risks associated with “superbugs" resistant to antibiotics, the extent of U.S. preparedness should there be an outbreak of antibiotic resistant bacteria, and what plans the federal government has to confront this public health challenge.and the Majority Memorandum and witness testimony will be available at the same link as they are posted.

Also on Tuesday, the Subcommittee on Communications and Technology will hold a hearing to review the FCC’s proposed privacy rules for broadband Internet service providers (ISPs). The hearing follows a recent committee letter to FCC Chairman Tom Wheeler as part of the subcommittee’s continued efforts to prevent harmful agency overreach.as they are posted.

Also on Tuesday, the full committee will convene for opening statements only for a markup of landmark mental health reform. The full committee will consider Oversight and Investigations Subcommittee Chairman Tim Murphy’s (R-PA) bipartisan H.R. 2646, the Helping Families in Mental Health Crisis Act. In the wake of the tragedy of Newton, Connecticut, Murphy has led the multi-year effort to reform the nation’s failing mental health care system. The Subcommittee on Health passed H.R. 2646 last November. The committee has had success in getting important mental health provisions across the finish line, most recently funding for the Assisted Outpatient Treatment grant program. The committee will consider an amendment in the nature of a substitute (AINS) that achieves meaningful, long-pursued reforms. The AINS will be made available early next week.

Electronic copies of the legislation and a background memo can be found on the Energy and Commerce Committee’s website here. Amendment text and votes will be available at the same link as they are posted.

On Wednesday, the full committee will reconvene its markup of H.R. 2646.
