WASHINGTON, DC - The Energy and Commerce Committee this week added to its bipartisan #RecordOfSuccess as the House of Representatives cleared two committee energy bills and the Senate unanimously approved a much-needed, and years in the making, update to our chemical safety laws.

LANDMARK CHEMICAL SAFETY REFORMS: On Tuesday, the Senate unanimously approved the Frank R. Lautenberg Chemical Safety for the 21st Century Act. The bill previously passed the House by a vote of 403 to 12 on May 24, 2016. Updating the 40-year-old Toxic Substances Control Act of 1976 has long been a priority for the Energy and Commerce Committee, and the landmark legislation culminates a multi-year, multi-Congress effort. Once signed, the new law will provide American consumers with safety and certainty while protecting the environment. It represents the most meaningful and comprehensive reform to issues involving environment and the economy in decades.

COMMONSENSE OZONE BILL: On Wednesday, the House also cleared committee member Rep. Pete Olson’s H.R. 4775, the Ozone Standards Implementation Act, by a vote of 234 to 177. The commonsense bill, seeks to provide states flexibility to implement two ozone standards, and provides other relief. The bipartisan solution simultaneously protects jobs, the economy, and the public health.

PIPELINE SAFETY: Also on Wednesday, the House unanimously passed the SAFE PIPES Act of 2016, bipartisan legislation to enhance pipeline safety, clarify our oversight efforts, and provide greater certainty in the transportation of energy commodities. The bill is the result of a collaborative effort between the Energy and Commerce Committee and the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, incorporating text from separate bills passed out of each committee.

Energy and Commerce Committee Chairman Fred Upton (R-MI) commented, “It was a big week, and a lot of hard work, in some cases years of hard work, went into these bills, and we’re seeing the results. Thoughtful legislating takes time, and we are proud of our ongoing bipartisan record of success. Our work continues to advance thoughtful solutions to create jobs, say yes to energy, and update our nation’s laws for the 21st century." Related Items
