HEARING: #SubEnvEcon to Examine CERCLA Implementation

The following press release was published by the House Committee on Energy and Commerce on July 6, 2016. It is reproduced in full below.

WASHINGTON, DC - The Environment and the Economy Subcommittee, chaired by Rep. John Shimkus (R-IL), has scheduled a hearing for Wednesday, July 13, 2016, at 10 a.m. in room 2123 of the Rayburn House Office Building. The hearing is entitled, “Oversight of CERCLA Implementation."

Members will examine and focus on identifying problems with how the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act (CERCLA) is currently being implemented. The subcommittee will seek to answer questions such as:

* Does the current CERCLA process encourage or impede timely and efficient cleanups?

* Is EPA following the process currently in place, are tasks and decision-making authority being delegated from EPA Headquarters to the Regions appropriately?

* What needs to be done to ensure that complex contaminated sites are adequately cleaned up?

Specifically, members will look at whether the current law is adequate to direct EPA to implement a cleanup program that can efficiently and cost-effectively get sites cleaned up.

“This subcommittee has a long history of examining the CERCLA program. Last year, we looked at improving the relationship between federal agencies and the states as it relates to federal facility cleanups and it was clear there was room for improvement," said Chairman Shimkus. “We’re looking forward to examining the ongoing implementation of CERCLA, the transparency and direction of the process, and what can be done to improve the cleanup of complex sites."
