Energy and Commerce Ranking Member Frank Pallone, Jr. (D-NJ) issued the following statement today upon news that the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) decided to maintain the current greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions standards for model years 2022-2025 cars and light trucks:
“EPA’s decision to move forward with strong tailpipe emission standards for light-duty vehicles is good news for consumers, for automakers, and for the environment. These standards protect public health and the environment, and are vital in our fight to curb pollution from the transportation sector, to slow the pace of climate change and avoid its most serious consequences.
“Domestic automakers are meeting the current standards, and further improvements in vehicle technology will ensure that car companies’ remain competitive in the global market. More efficient vehicles protect consumers from the unpredictable changes in gas prices, and allow them to keep fuel costs manageable no matter which vehicle they choose to drive. Maintaining EPA’s strong tailpipe emissions standards will ensure these benefits will continue to grow in the future."
