WASHINGTON, DC - The Subcommittee on Environment, chaired by Rep. John Shimkus (R-IL), today announced a hearing for Thursday, March 16, 2017, at 10:15 a.m. in room 2322 of the Rayburn House Office Building. The hearing is entitled, “Reinvestment and Rehabilitation of Our Nation’s Safe Drinking Water Delivery Systems."
Members of the subcommittee will broadly explore drinking water infrastructure needs across the country and ways to bring greater investment in and updates to these systems so they can operate well in the future. Last Congress, the Water Infrastructure Improvements for the Nation (WIIN) Act was signed into law and included new funding provisions under the Safe Drinking Water Act, which falls under the committee’s jurisdiction. This legislation provided new funding for disadvantaged communities, lead pipe replacement, and deployment of innovative technologies across the country to improve drinking water infrastructure.
“Next week’s hearing will be an important first step in examining our nation’s aging drinking water infrastructure," said Chairman Shimkus. “While we made progress last year with the WIIN Act, more can, and should, be done. We will explore what needs to be changed and ways to improve our infrastructure."
