WASHINGTON, DC - The Subcommittee on Health, chaired by Rep. Michael C. Burgess, M.D. (R-TX), announced a legislative hearing for Wednesday, May 17, 2017, at 10:15 a.m. in room 2322 of the Rayburn House Office Building. The hearing is entitled, “Examining Initiatives to Advance Public Health."
#SubHealth will consider four bipartisan bills seeking to advance public health:
* H.R. 931, the Firefighter Cancer Registry Act of 2017, authored by Rep. Chris Collins (R-NY), requires the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to develop and maintain a registry to collect data regarding the incidence of cancer in firefighters.
* H.R. 1876, the Good Samaritan Health Professionals Act, authored by Rep. Marsha Blackburn (R-TN) would shield health care professionals from liability under federal or state law when they volunteer their services during a federally declared disaster.
* H.R. 767, the Stop, Observe, Ask and Respond (SOAR) to Health and Wellness Act of 2017, authored by Rep. Steve Cohen (D-TN) would provide health care professionals training on how to identify and appropriately treat human trafficking victims.
* H.R. __, the Action for Dental Health Act of 2017, authored by Rep. Robin Kelly (D-IL), would reauthorize CDC oral health promotion and disease prevention programs. The bill would also permit the CDC to award grants or enter into contracts with stakeholders to develop and implement initiatives to improve oral health education, and increase access to dental services.
“This subcommittee has a rich history of developing important bills to advance public health and we’ll continue in that effort next week by examining this first set of bills," said Chairman Burgess. “These bills will make important strides in caring for our first responders, providing critical training for health professionals, and maintaining important resources for oral health and disease prevention."
