WASHINGTON, DC - The Subcommittee on Digital Commerce and Consumer Protection, chaired by Rep. Bob Latta (R-OH), today announced a hearing for Tuesday, May 23, 2017, at 10:15 a.m. in room 2322 of the Rayburn House Office Building. The hearing is entitled, “Disrupter Series: Delivering to Consumers."
The variety and choice in the consumer and business-delivery market is rapidly increasing. As technology develops and becomes more readily accessible, the expectation for reaching consumers and businesses in a real-time on-demand economy has grown exponentially. Whether it’s the on-demand delivery of groceries, takeout, formal ware, dry cleaning, or packages, businesses are navigating the complexities of how to disrupt the marketplace in such a way that products and services are delivered much faster, more efficiently, and cheaper than ever before. Next week’s hearing will examine the challenges and opportunities facing companies in this space and the potential this industry holds.
“The digital economy has opened up an entirely new realm of possibilities for consumers. Instant downloads, immediate purchases, and at-home deliveries are no longer considered a luxury- it’s now an expectation, as this technology has become ingrained in Americans’ everyday routines," said Chairman Latta. “Over the last decade, we’ve seen the delivery service industry explode in popularity and disrupt the marketplace to save consumers time, reduce spending, and increase convenience. Next week’s hearing is an opportunity to hear more about the challenges faced by those in the delivery service industry and discuss how Congress can work to ensure these technologies safely deliver benefits to the consumer."
The Majority Memorandum, witness list, and witness testimony for the hearing will be available here as they are posted.
