Blackburn, Latta Schedule Joint Subcommittee Hearing on Tech Business Practices and Consumer Protection

The following press release was published by the House Committee on Energy and Commerce on Nov. 21, 2017. It is reproduced in full below.

WASHINGTON, DC - Communications and Technology Subcommittee Chairman Marsha Blackburn (R-TN) and Digital Commerce and Consumer Protection Subcommittee Chairman Bob Latta (R-OH) scheduled a joint subcommittee hearing for Wednesday, Nov. 29, 2017 at 10:00 a.m. in room 2123 of the Rayburn House Office Building. The hearing is entitled, “Algorithms: How Companies’ Decisions About Data and Content Impact Consumers."

The hearing will examine how actions taken by tech companies and online platforms affect consumer privacy and choice. #SubCommTech and #SubDCCP members will have the opportunity to hear from research experts and academics about the impacts of online algorithms, advertising, privacy policies, consumer data flows, content regulation practices, and more.

“Even a decade ago, the potential impact of the internet on economic growth, opportunity, and access to information was unimaginable. In many ways, this innovation created positive changes - and new risks - for the American people. Like in any other business, consumers should be able to make informed decisions about their online experience. On behalf of consumers, we intend to shine a light on how technology companies and online platforms use Americans’ data and filter information," said Blackburn and Latta.

Full Energy and Commerce Committee Chairman Greg Walden (R-OR) first announced the hearing last month in his op-ed posted to Medium, “Consumer Protection in the 21st Century."

The Majority Memorandum, witness list, and witness testimony will be available here as they are posted.
