#SubOversight to Examine Post-Breach Consumer Identity Verification Practices

The following press release was published by the House Committee on Energy and Commerce on Nov. 21, 2017. It is reproduced in full below.

WASHINGTON, DC - The Subcommittee on Oversight and Investigations scheduled a hearing for Thursday, Nov. 30, 2017, at 10:15 a.m. in room 2322 of the Rayburn House Office Building. The hearing is entitled, “Identity Verification in a Post-Breach World."

After several significant data breaches in recent years impacting hundreds of millions of Americans, malicious actors can now package consumer information from multiple stolen data sets into one stolen identity profile. #SubOversight will examine how to verify identities and protect personal data online compromised in this new, post-breach world.

As Energy and Commerce Committee Chairman Greg Walden (R-OR) said in his recent op-ed, “This mosaic of personal information potentially exposed by a number of breaches over several years could have detrimental effects on a consumer’s financial safety, making bank accounts and other sensitive online accounts more susceptible to theft. My colleagues and I will hold [a] hearing to assess identity verification practices, and determine whether they can be improved to protect personal data on the web even after a consumer’s information has been breached."

The Majority Memorandum, witness list, and witness testimony will be available here as they are posted.
