WASHINGTON, DC - The Environment Subcommittee, chaired by Rep. John Shimkus (R-IL), today announced a hearing for Wednesday, Feb. 14, 2018, at 2 p.m. in room 2123 of the Rayburn House Office Building. The hearing is entitled, “New Source Review Permitting Challenges for Manufacturing and Infrastructure."
Next week, #SubEnvironment will examine the New Source Review (NSR) permitting program within the Environmental Protection Agency. The NSR preconstruction permitting program is intended to protect air quality by ensuring that appropriate control technologies are installed on new or modified power plants, factories, and other major sources of emissions. However, requirements have become more complicated, burdensome, and uncertain since program inception, which presents increasing challenges that can be an impediment to modernization and expansion of manufacturing and industrial operations as the economy picks up.
“Currently, NSR is an overly complex, costly, and time-consuming program that is having an adverse impact on economic growth, technical innovation, and the nation’s ability to modernize our infrastructure," said #SubEnvironment Chairman Shimkus. “Next week, we will hear from witnesses on potential reforms to the NSR program, so we can effectively address air quality issues while not stifling investment in innovative technologies, manufacturing, and important project upgrades."
