Washington, D.C. - Energy and Commerce Ranking Member Frank Pallone, Jr. (D-NJ) issued the following statement in response to the ruling by the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals today saying that the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has the authority to regulate the practices of internet service providers when they are not acting as common carriers:
“Today’s 9th Circuit ruling is a win for consumers. The FTC can and should take actions to protect consumers from unfair and deceptive acts by companies when they’re not acting as common carriers. But this decision does not fix the hole created by Republicans who stopped the FCC from enforcing strong privacy and data security safeguards. Consumers still lack adequate protections without clear rules of the road."
