Pallone on FDA Proposal to Lower Nicotine in Cigarettes

The following press release was published by the House Committee on Energy and Commerce on March 15, 2018. It is reproduced in full below.

Washington, DC - Energy and Commerce Ranking Member Frank Pallone, Jr. (D-NJ) released the following statement today in response to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA)’s issuance of an advance notice of proposed rulemaking to consider a product standard to lower nicotine in cigarettes to minimally or non-addictive levels:

“I am pleased that FDA is moving forward with efforts to reduce nicotine in combustible cigarettes. This proposal has the potential to save millions of lives in the future and could help prevent the next generation from becoming addicted to cigarettes.

“While this proposal is a promising step forward, I remain deeply concerned by the FDA’s delays in the deeming rule for e-cigarettes and other electronic nicotine products that could undermine the public health actions FDA is taking today. I hope FDA will reconsider the deeming rule delay and continue its important work on matters such as the impact of tobacco flavors designed to appeal to kids."
