Energy and Commerce Ranking Member Frank Pallone, Jr. (D-NJ) released the following statement today following an announcement from Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Commissioner Scott Gottlieb, M.D., on new efforts to address youth access to tobacco products, including JUUL and other e-cigarettes:
“I commend FDA Commissioner Gottlieb for taking action to limit youth access to e-cigarette products like JUUL, and am pleased FDA is using its enforcement tools to prevent fewer kids and teens from trying these products. This is a good step forward in protecting kids from these dangerous products, and I hope the agency will continue these efforts in other areas. I remain concerned by FDA’s decision to delay certain provisions of the final deeming rule that would ensure FDA can exercise sufficient oversight of e-cigarettes and other electronic nicotine products. While I am encouraged by today’s actions, I continue to urge FDA to reconsider the deeming rule delay."
Last month, Pallone sent a letter to FDA voicing concerns about JUUL products and that the delays to the final deeming rule will lead to more kids and teens getting addicted to tobacco products.
