Walden, Shimkus on House Passage of Historic Nuclear Waste Storage Legislation

The following press release was published by the House Committee on Energy and Commerce on May 10, 2018. It is reproduced in full below.

WASHINGTON, DC - House Energy and Commerce Committee Chairman Greg Walden (R-OR) and Environment Subcommittee Chairman John Shimkus (R-IL) released the following statement after the House of Representatives advanced the Nuclear Waste Policy Amendments Act (NWPAA, H.R. 3053) by a vote of 340-72.

“It’s long past time for the federal government to keep its 35-year-old promise to taxpayers, ratepayers, and communities across the country to permanently dispose of spent nuclear fuel and defense waste. The Nuclear Waste Policy Amendments Act is a commonsense step in that direction, and we commend today’s bipartisan vote in the House. We urge the Senate to quickly take up and pass this legislation to address this national priority. We are committed to helping the 121 communities in 39 states with nuclear waste sitting around get the permanent storage facility up and running," said Chairman Walden and Chairman Shimkus.
